Winter Solstice

The 21st of December is the shortest day of the year, where the sun is at its lowest point. On this day, we are celebrating the return of the light and the winter solstice. In the natural surroundings of the Proefpark de Punt, we explore local mythologies, the supernatural, and the body as a prism for new modes of thinking.

The evening begins with a lecture by Urban Witch Amanda Wams, who discusses the love affair between the God of the Maas and the Rotte River Nymph. (Dutch spoken – English handout provided).

The evening culminates with a new work by Eothen Stearn, SHEE-LA-NA-GIG, a performative lecture incorporating image, music, and text and taking influences from Denise Diderot, Jean Genet, vagina loquens folklore, and experimental 1970’s porn.

´Witching Ain´t Easy´, a new essay by London-based writer and editor Phillipa Snow, will be presented during this evening.

---

Clothing advice: This is an outdoor event. Although there are heaters and shelter, we advise dressing for cold, wet weather.

----

The celebration of the winter solstice takes place as part of the exhibition HOST – a duo exhibition featuring work by Jaakko Pallasvuo & Anni Puolakka and Tarwuk – on show at MAMA until 11 February 2018.

Sara Hamadeh's performance 'A Refusing Machine' takes place tomorrow, 8PM at TENT.

While hundreds of amateur videos of the military aircraft and drones that fly daily over Syria appear online every day, Hamadeh outlines an image of recent military history in which politics, technology, and popular culture coalesce. In her performance, she combines storytelling with archival footage and media images to establish a relationship between aerial warfare, the cockpit, and the role of humans.

Sara Hamadeh - Performance

Tickets cost €5,- / €3,- students and can be purchased via our website:

Play Back Talk Back #1: Post Carnival of the Oppressed Feelings

Play Back Talk Back #1 by TAAK
Donderdag 14 december om 20.00 uur. Deur open: 19.45 uur
Locatie: Tuinzaal, Tolhuistuin, Amsterdam

Over het Carnival of the Oppressed Feelings

Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez on Delphine Seyrig / Mounira Al Solh

As part of If I Can’t Dance, I Don’t Want To Be Part Of Your Revolution’s introductions to the artists and researchers of VII (2017–2018), Social Movement, we are pleased to welcome you to the EYE Filmmuseum, Amsterdam on Friday 15 December for an introduction to Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez’s research on Delphine Seyrig and a screening of 'à la santé des allies' by Mounira Al Solh.

The afternoon will begin at 2pm with Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez’s introduction to her contemporary reading and reactivation of the video work of French actress, video maker, and renowned feminist activist Delphine Seyrig (1932–1990).

Central to the project is Seyrig’s unrealised black and white silent feature film on the supposed letters of American frontierswoman Calamity Jane to her daughter (first edited by Jean Hickok McCormick in 1949). Commenced in the late seventies, across her years of work towards the film’s production, Seyrig first involved Babette Mangolte as camerawoman for research footage produced during a visit to Billings, Montana, and later the artist Etel Adnan to produce a text. The relationship between a mother and daughter was at the heart of Seyrig’s interest in this story, and is something that she additionally explored as an actress in Chantal Akerman’s film 'Letters Home' (1986).

For the introduction to her research project, Petrešin-Bachelez will consider the legacy of Seyrig’s life and elaborate on her interest in this paternal relationship through screening excerpts of Mangolte’s rushes and Akerman’s film, alongside Seyrig's own video works 'Inês' (1974), 'S.C.U.M Manifesto' (1976), and 'Maso et miso vont en bateau' (1976) which were made individually or in collaboration with Carole Roussopoulos, Nadja Ringart, and Ioana Wieder.

Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez’s project is part of a larger commission initiated by Centre audiovisuel Simone de Beauvoir (Paris), on which she is working with the art historian Giovanna Zapperi. The project with If I Can’t Dance will also include a collaboration with the choreographer Eszter Salamon on the development of a new work.

To conclude the afternoon, at 4pm the artist Mounira Al Solh will screen her video 'à la santé des allies' (2003–2016), duration 33:34 minutes.

'à la santé des allies', which translates as "to the health of allies", recounts the potentially endless variations of the beginning of a film. Through this, the film narrates layers of sub-stories and parallel events in Lebanon and Syria during the pan-Arab Nasserites movements of the 1950s and 1960s. Told from the different perspective of the artist’s relatives, each person’s opinion and recollection of the same political or social incident begin to contradict each other, to mix up events both personal and political, and to reveal time as three-dimensional rather than linear.

Admission to the screening is €5-.

Tickets are sold as a double bill and include admission to the presentation on Delphine Seyrig by Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez and the screening of 'à la santé des allies' by Mounira Al Solh.

These presentations are the final event of an unfolding programme of introductions to the artists and researchers of VII (2017–2018), Social Movement, which see the commissioned artists present an existing work and the Performance in Residence researchers an introduction to their project. These events have taken place each month—across September, October, November and December—in various locations in Amsterdam.

The programme of If I Can’t Dance is financially supported by the Mondriaan Fund, the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union, the AFK (Amsterdam Fund for the Arts), and Ammodo. If I Can’t Dance is a member of Corpus and Performance Platform.

New Geographies

Casco has been invited to join a group of Dutch arts institutions that will advise their UK counterparts, due to an unexpected connection between the Netherlands and the East of England:

"The landscape of much of the East has been shaped by a historic relationship to our near neighbours in The Netherlands; in 1631, Cornelius Vermuyden used Dutch engineering techniques to drain the East Anglian Fens, creating the unique landscape that still captures the imaginations of artists today. In response to this historic connection and building on long-term partnerships established with northern Europe, in particular through EastInternational (1991-2009) ECVAN has been developing relationships with peer organisations in The Netherlands, many of which are highly regarded institutions with international reputations.

In 2014 ECVAN initiated visits to The Netherlands, which led to an ECVAN organised symposium in April 2016 entitled Working Together: How Artists Impact Institutions featuring some of the directors, curators and artists from these institutions speaking about the ways in which they work. The symposium catalysed the ECVAN steering committee to consider how best to work with our Dutch partners to support the development of the visual arts sector in the East of England, to reach new audiences for art within a context that currently has a distinct lack of opportunities."

It is also within this framework that New Geographies is currently looking for expressions of interest from artists from both the UK and internationally. The deadline for submissions in response to the Open Call is Sunday 28 January 2018!

"New Geographies' aim is to create a new map of the East of England based on personal thoughts, reflections and stories of unexplored or over-looked places, rather than on historic or economical centres. During Summer of 2017, we invited the public to nominate overlooked or forgotten places throughout Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk to add to this map. We received over 270 nominations so thank you for your contributions!

We are now inviting artists to respond to the nominations and are seeking Expressions of Interest from artists across the UK and internationally to create excellent art works inspired by the places you selected. Ten new commissions will be delivered over the next two years."
